3 Off the Beaten Path Spots in Central America
Central America is the perfect destination for those searching for a dose of adventure combined with a laid-back atmosphere and stunning landscapes. So I’m sharing with you three hidden gems which are some of my favorite off the beaten path spots in the region and a must to add to your #bucketlist. (and yes, I’m aware Mexico technically counts as North America but just go with it for the sake of a snazzy title haha)
1. Isla Holbox, Mexico – Isla Holbox is a small picturesque island in the Yucatán Peninsula that’s definitely worth a visit. Located only a 3-hour drive away from popular Cancún, Isla Holbox is super easy to explore by bike or golf cart, the island’s main mode of transportation. It’s also perfect for adventure-seekers that can choose between diving, paddle boarding and kite surfing and even getting the chance to see bioluminescent plankton at night (something truly magical!). Another great reason to visit Isla Holbox, and also why the island was on my bucket list, is being able to swim with majestic whales sharks in a responsible and ethical way with one of their highly regulated local tours.
2. Santa Catalina, Panama - Located on the Pacific side of Panama, Santa Catalina is a laid-back beach town that’s truly off the beaten path. Although there are only two shops, one wifi network and no cash points in the whole town, you’ll soon forget about it when you lay eyes on the crystal clear waters and absolutely unspoiled scenery that this beach has to offer. During your time in Santa Catalina, make sure to go whale watching, snorkeling with sea turtles or exploring the equally pristine neighboring islands such as Isla Gobernadora and Isla Cébaco.
3. Bacalar, Mexico - One of the best ways of finding insider info is talking to locals which is how I found out about Bacalar. This paradise town sits on the very south of Quintana Roo and, despite its close distance from busy Tulum, it still feels very remote. Besides the many cenotes, Bacalar’s highlight is the Lagoon of Seven Colours, a stunning freshwater lagoon with hues of blue and turquoise waters so clear that you can see the sparkling white sand at the bottom. The sand is also known for its mineral-rich healing properties which you can use to exfoliate your skin. And as it couldn’t be any different, you can get your share of adventure by sailing or wakeboarding on the lagoon as well.
